Any mechanics out there? Dan?
This gearbox doesn’t feel right. I wonder if I have damaged it with the 15 minutes of motoring with the lever in the wrong poition. It is fine now but when you engage gear it seems to have no thrust, getting 1.5 knots at half revs. If you rev it up it seems to solve…

En Route to St Kilda
Position N63,03.7 x W019,25.85 We completed our chores on Sunday morning and Gudrun and I climbed up Heimaklettur, a spectacular hill over looking the harbour and the south coast of Iceland. The weather was perfect and the whole island was smiling. After a swim and hot tub we returned to Sumara to clear customs. This…

Thembi News
Thembi are doing fine but a bit short on wind.Position N56,14 x W008,35. They were 90 nm off the Butt of Lewis on 6th August at 19:26. Their weekdays are not Monday, Tuesday etc but Curry, Pizza etc. So in Thembi time it was Pizza19:26. Quite a good system.

Vestmannaeyjar Islands
Position N63,26 x W20,16. Heimaey Harbour. Calm Well we made it, but only just. After we rounded Reykjanes Peninsular the wind became light and we needed to motor to make any worthwhile progress. Gradually the wind increased and we were able to sail again but it was an easterly and the sea was more lumpy…

Rounded Reykjanes Peninsular
Position N63,47.37 x W022,20.27. Wind: All over the place. We have now successfully rounded the headlands with a following tide. We were late arriving at the northern headland because we had to beat into a westerly instead of wafting along in the forecast north easterly. But the north easterly did eventually arrive and we cleared…

Investment Opportunity
Position N67,05.4 x W020,36.9. Wind NE F4 We are still under poled out genoa and full main making 5-6 kn. Sumara rolls less with the genoa than with the yankee but it’s still pretty rolly. The wind is gradually backing so in a few hours we will gybe the pole and go on a magic…

The Latest Cunning Plan
N68,41 x W014,34. Calm Now we are motoring through a slight sea and I’ve been thinking! We certainly haven’t given up on Greenland yet. It was always going to be the icing on the cake but I’m rather found of icing. So the latest rouse is as follows: We arrive in Isafjordur on 16th July.…

We are underway
Position N70,22.86 x W009,21.67 A quick update while conditions remain moderate. Sumara left Jan Mayen at 1630 yesterday and Thembi left a little before. Sarah is now on Aurora and Charlotte is with Sumara. Sarah’s puffin is still on Sumara but we will look after her. The forecast isn’t great with strong south westerlies forecast…

Off Towards Greenland
Position N70,58.16 x W008,41.29 Now I’m sitting on Sumara with John, Tim and Sarah discussing plans for a quick departure. Our Charlotte is off sailing on Aurora for a day trip with some people from the Main Command Station. The grib weather data doesn’t look too good as far as wind direction goes so it…
