Day 100 – 20th June 2026

This year the stars are aligning. The weather here is glorious, I could even call it hot! It all helps to boost the confidence level but it’s not just the sun.
The ice has now cleared around Scoresby Sund, so that is one worry ticked of the list. The sat phone is receiving grib files (weather maps) so that is good too, especially as we are probably the only boat up here refraining from using Starlink. I need to thank Gerry for resolving that issue and thank Amit and Grit for setting up Linux in the first place.
Customs have now cleared us to leave. Even the weather looks like it is playing fair.
So our current plan is to sail 40 nm to Siglufjordur at 05:00 on Tuesday into a headwind. If it proves a struggle we will divert to Hrisey Island in the Akureryi fjord. It will be a good shakedown cruise for Paul. We will wait there for a couple of days while the strong winds further north abate then we will make a break for it. It will take us about four days to arrive in Ittoqqortoormitt, the only settlement in the sound.
Yesterday a boat called Phywave was towed 150 nm into the harbour by a research vessel. The Skipper, Harry Anderson, is attempting a solo circumnavigation of the Arctic Circle (like Ella Hibbert) but his electronic compass failed seemingly leaving him at mercy of the seas. Luckily he has now secured a new compass and hopes to continue on his way soon.
A while afterwards a fine blue Swan yacht called Reindeer arrived.
They are hoping to sail to Scoresby too. We were invited aboard to discuss our sailing plans. It was nice to share all our exciting ideas.
