North West Passage – Day 10 – Still in Allen Bay near Resolute!

13th August 2023 – Sunday

Allen Bay, Near Resolute.

We have been here for eight days now. Firstly the ice was the problem but now it is the wind. It has been blowing at near gale force for a few days now with no signs of it relenting. We are not able to get off the boat until the wind dies down but luckily cabin fever hasn’t set in.

Arthur is riddling the stove while Dan has a snooze

There are always a few tasks to do, although they are becoming less mission critical and more a pleasant way to while away some time. The unfortunately named card game “…. Head” is played after our evening meal. Most of the settlements up here are dry or “damp” which means restricted access to alcohol. We have a bottle of whisky, rum and gin which must remain onboard. It is looking like the Good Ship Integrity will be a dry ship soon! The nosh has been first class with Wills perfect bread making skills and Arthur’s imaginative cooking really setting the standard. I know Dan’s fish curry is legendary so I look forward to our first catch. I think I let the side down with my slightly tepid fish cakes. Our current hope is that the wind will abate on Thursday (and it will not have brought in new ice) and we can get underway to Gjoa Haven about 300 nm south. It looks like Integrity was the first yacht to make it this far in the North West Passage. We haven’t seen any other yachts but this is a remote anchorage several miles walk (14 km) into the settlement of Resolute. We believe some yachts may be sheltering in the deep fjords along the south coast of Devon Island.

  1. Good luck Alasdair, hope you are able to set off shortly, feels like you all deserve the weather window

    1. Thanks John! We made our escape and have arrived in Gjoa Haven. Refuel then off towards Cambridge Bay tonight. All good fun! Fancy trying it in Brimble?
