Ullapool
Scoresbysund is often blocked by ice even in the summer. In order to approach we need good up to date ice reports as a 26ft wooden boat isn’t exactly an ice breaker. We need to thank John and Phyllis from Morgans Cloud (excellent website for Arctic Sailing) for the method and also Gerry, Samantha and Richard back at mission control (ok it’s back at the office really). The method is to download the ice report from Polarview.no (thanks to Tim Loftus for that advice) and then reduce the resolution and image size until it can be sent over a satelite phone. We can then recieve them at sea. We need an ice coverage of less than 4/10ths to approach. There is a sample ice report above. We need the area around Scoresbysund to be in green before we dare approach.
